MDF Furniture and Its Finishings

When we talk about MDF, we would consider weight, dust control, vapors and fasteners. Medium density fiberboard (MDF) is an engineered wood product formed from wood fibers. The wood fibers are glued together using wax and resin adhesive. Applying high temperature and pressure, panels are made. The resulting smooth wood products has no wood grain. Also, the finishing of the MDF furniture plays a significant role in its characteristic and distinctiveness.

It is used extensively in the commercial furniture industry for the manufacture of kitchen cabinet, coffee table, TV stand, etc. The follow chart illustrates the advantages and disadvantages of the MDF furniture.

One distinctive feature of the MDF furniture is its appearance and finishing. The decorative surface of the MDF furniture can be broadly separated into two groups: overlays and coatings.Surface finishing are applied by various techniques to panel products like particleboard, medium density fiberboard (MDF) and hardboard. Overlays include products such as foils, high pressure laminates, papers, veneers and vinyls. Coatings such as melamine are used as industrial decorative surfaces on composite wood substrates. Veneers and melamine are the most common used finishing in MDF furniture.

Veneers are thin slices of real wood glued to a substrate that is either solid wood, plywood, particle board or MDF. The quality of a veneer is determined by the quality of the substrate and by the rarity and beauty of the natural pattern of the wood from which the veneer is cut. Veneers are available in a variety of wood species, such as ash, birch, oak, maple, walnut, beech, cherry, etc. Veneers use the natural grain patterns of wood to create beautiful surface patterns on furniture, sometimes with intricate details. Due to its superior surface qualities of being flat, smooth, uniform, dense and free of knots and grain patterns, MDF is a preferred substrate for natural wood veneer. Wood veneers have become thinner as the technology to process them has improved. In addition, the dimensional stability, strength properties and cost advantages make MDF furniture more popular.

Melamine is a thermosetting plastic resin combined with formaldehyde and hardened by a heating process. It is applied to a hard substrate such as wood, MDF and particleboard to make melamine furniture. Melamine furniture basically are pieces of furniture constructed of wood that then is covered with sheets of melamine, providing smooth and sleek surfaces. This type of furniture provides an affordable way to decorate a home with durable and fashionable tables, chairs, desk, cabinets and accessories. But it is more vulnerable to damage than wood veneers. But it can create uniformity of its “grain” and color as well as easily cleanable surface.
